Every Minecraft player knows the pain: you spend hours finding a wolf, tame it, and five minutes later it jumps into lava or walks off a cliff.

Vanilla Outsider: Better Dogs completely overhauls wolf AI to make them smarter, safer, and livelier. Now powered by a high-performance Event-Driven Scheduler (v3.0+), wolves act efficiently without lagging your world.

✨ Key Features

🧠 Unique Personality System

When you tame a wolf, it develops one of three permanent personalities, visually distinct by their particle effects.

❤️ Pacifist The Healer. Avoids combat unless you are hurt. High health, low damage.

🐕 Advanced Social AI (The "Snitch" System)

Wolves now interact with each other in complex, organic ways using our new Event-Driven AI:

  • Baby Retaliation (The One-Bite Rule): If you hit a baby wolf, it doesn't just take it. It bites you back EXACTLY ONCE to teach you a lesson, then forgives you.
  • Adult Correction (The Snitch System): If a baby bites you, nearby Aggressive Adults will intervene. The baby "snitches" on itself via the Event System, causing one adult to walk over and discipline it with ONE BITE. No gang-ups, no death loops.
  • Blood Feuds: Sometimes, discipline goes too far. There is a small chance (5%) that a correction turns into a permanent Blood Feud, where the wolves will fight to the death.
  • Play Fighting: Large packs of wolves will now engage in safe, non-lethal play fights to burn off energy. They will chase and nip at each other without taking real damage.
  • Natural Follow: Dogs now try to catch up by running faster before they resort to teleporting. The teleport distance has been increased to 18 blocks (up from 12) for a more fluid experience.
  • Personality-Scaled Teleportation: Teleport thresholds now scale with personality. Aggressive dogs can wander up to 90 blocks (5x range) to hunt, while Pacifists stick close (0.5x range).
  • Native Integration (v3.1.20+): Full support for the vanilla Edit Game Rules menu. No more external config dependencies; manage your pack's behavior directly through the Minecraft UI.
  • Ultraguard Sync (Internal): Config files now automatically merge new settings, purge stale ones, and protect against corruption with atomic writes and auto-backups.

🛡️ Smart Safety AI

Stop worrying about your dogs killing themselves:

  • Cliff Safety: Wolves detect airborne targets and STOP chasing instead of jumping after them.
  • Lava & Fire Avoidance: Wolves actively pathfind around dangerous blocks.
  • Creeper Awareness: Wolves flee when they hear a Creeper hiss!

🎁 The Gift System

Like cats, your loyal dogs will now bring you treasures based on their personality!

  • Aggressive: Brings "trophies" from their hunts (Bones, Rotten Flesh).
  • Pacifist: Brings "foraged" items from nature (Berries, Flowers).

⚙️ Configuration (Native Game Rules)

Better Dogs has fully transitioned to the Native Minecraft Game Rules system for its configuration, ensuring 100% compatibility with snapshots and a seamless vanilla-style experience.

[!IMPORTANT] Better Dogs Custom Category (v3.1.20+): To keep your settings organized, all 30+ mod parameters are now grouped into a dedicated "Better Dogs" folder inside the "Edit Game Rules" screen.

  • Native UI: No need for Mod Menu or Cloth Config in 26.1+.
  • Legacy Support: Version 1.21.11 still uses the old Cloth Config system.

  • Per-Personality Stats: Set unique Health, Speed, and Damage modifiers for Aggressive, Pacifist, and Normal wolves.
  • Social Probabilities: Adjust the exact chance for Zoomies, Group Howls, Play Fighting, and Blood Feuds.
  • Genetic DNA: Fine-tune the chance for puppies to inherit their parents' characteristics.
  • Safety & Quality of Life: Toggle Friendly Fire protection, Cliff Safety, and Teleportation ranges.

  1. Download the latest Minecraft 26.1 Snapshot.
  2. Install Fabric Loader.
